Being a shedding type game, it requires players to play tactfully in order to win. For those who are not familiar with Speed, here are the rules that will help you understand the game and play it correctly. A Piece of Advice.

Dealing: (refer also to the image below)

  • When dealing for the game of speed, keep all cards faced down until the game begins.
  • In the center of the table, make 2 piles of 5 cards and separate them. In between those 2 piles, place 2 cards side-by-side.
  • Deal the rest of the cards so each player has a pile of 20 cards.
  • Each player can then take the top 5 cards off of their piles of 20 and prepare to begin the game.

Gameplay:

  • To begin the game, each player simultaneously grabs a card in the center of the table and flips it over. This is usually done at the same time by counting to 3 together, then flipping.
  • There are no turns in speed, so from there, players can quickly lay down cards from their hands (if possible), one after the other, on either of the faced up cards.
  • A card can only play if it is in sequential order (either increasing or decreasing) of the showing cards on either of the 2 piles. For example if you have a 5,6,6,7,J in your hand and the middle piles show a Queen and a 5, you could lay down your 6 on top of the 5. From there (if you are quicker than your opponent) you could lay down your 7, then your other 6, then your 5, and you could lay your Jack down on the other pile (because it is showing a Queen). Sequences can wrap around the horn (Queen to King to Ace to 2 to 3 for example).
  • After playing cards, you will need draw from your faced down stack of 15 cards to refill your hand. You can have no more than 5 cards in your hand at a time. Being able to quickly and continuously refill your hand is crucial to being a great speed player.
  • Sometimes gameplay stops because no one can play a card from their hand. Once both players admit their inability to play, they should each (at the same time) grab the top card from the outside piles and flip them over faced-up onto the inside piles. Gameplay continues on from there.
  • The first person to lay down all of their 20 cards wins the game.

Setting Up

Speed Card Game

  • Deal 5 cards to each player, ensuring that cards face down. These 5 cards make up each of the player's hands. They can look at the cards once all players have been dealt.
  • The playing table is composed of four piles – 2 center piles and 2 side piles (the reserve). Make sure that the cars in the center and side piles face down. Put 5 cards in both the side piles, then one card each on both the center piles. The center piles are where the participants will play.
  • Deal each of the players with a draw pile of 15 cards. The draw pile will be used by the player to recover 5 cards to their playing hands.
  • If there are more than two players, get an extra deck and add another center and side pile for each extra player.

Speed Card Game Directions

Gameplay

  • Start the game by flipping the 2 center cards. Each player must look at their hands and look for any sequential cards. He or she can play in either ascending or descending order. For example, if one of the cards in the center pile is an 8, players can play a 7 or 9.
  • Players will proceed to play simultaneously by placing one card each on either of the center pile. It can be greater or lesser value than the card in the center. Aces can be valued high and low, which means you can play either a King or a 2.
  • In the event that none of the players can make any legal plays with their hand, they can select a card from the side piles and place them upward, facing over the two center piles. Continue doing this until any of the cards become playable.
  • If the side piles run out, players can reshuffle the center cards, which can be used for the new side piles. Players can then turn over each card from the piles to continue playing.
  • When a player runs out of cards from his hands and the side pile, he must slap both the side piles and shout 'Speed' to win the game.

Variations

There are other rules that can be used on top of the existing rules.

  • Doubles: In this variation, players can play cards that are equal in value to one of the cards in the center pile. For example, if the card in the center pile is a queen, players can play a queen if he or she has it on hand.
  • Wild cards: You can use jokers as wild cards. That means jokers can take the value of any card, allowing you to play it at any time during the game. Well, except if it's the last card of the play.
